Approach
The training groups are not taken as a curriculum-driven experience. Although each group runs over a series of six sessions, we don't cover the exact same reading material in each group. This means it is possible for me to adapt the reading material to the experience level of the group, as well as to processes playing out in the group, which we could then explore further by reading and discussing literature pertaining to the specific dynamics we are experiencing in the group. Most participants, therefore, sign up for more than one series of six sessions, and there are participants who have been attending the groups now since their inception in 2020.
The weaving together of the dreams emanating from our social dreaming matrix, the theory that we collaboratively make sense of, our experience in the here-and-now and the action learning sets (discussion of cases using the Balint method), makes for a truly containing and enlightening experience.
The essence, thus, of what makes the groups meaningful, is that they provide a space to think, together with peers, about one's practice. At a deeper level than one would be able to do alone. They are therefore specifically aimed at professionals who want to take a continuous critical stance towards their own practice.

Feedback from participants
Being part of this Consultancy Training Group was an incredibly enriching experience that had a profound impact on my growth as a consultant and leader. It’s a fantastic space for professionals who want to sharpen their approach and get a deeper understanding of organizational dynamics. If you're looking to challenge your thinking, gain fresh insights, and engage in meaningful discussions, I highly recommend it!
Jacques Britz, Technical Leadership Consultant, South Africa
I attended this consultancy training when I was in a role I held no training for. It opened my mind to the functions of the unconscious in systems. From understanding the unconscious choice of a leadership style and how we show up in roles, to handling conflict within organizations, it helped me in my listening skill as I could, for the first time hear the unspoken as well. I would recommend this course as a core training for anyone aspiring to take up a leadership or management role.
Mncedisi Nkhoma, Leadership Coach, Zimbabwe and South Africa
The TILT Consultancy Training Group has been my continuous professional development investment for many years. It provides a reflective space to learn about myself in role, it provides a safe professional space to relate to other coaches and consultants and to learn from case studies; and it provides an intellectual space where we receive and unpack relevant and interesting information about our discipline. Dr Cooper is an SME with so much experience which he shares without hesitation. Overall, it is a huge support and enablement when navigating the complexities of my day-to-day dynamics; and in doing that, it helps me to be a better psychologist, coach and facilitator. (And I get some CPD points and I get to meet awesome people - which are added bonuses!)
Lurinda Maree, Industrial and Organisational Psychologist, South Africa
The Consultancy Training Group enhanced my understanding of the beneath the surface behaviours of both the leader and subordinate within the workplace. It further helped my role as coach to provide insights to employers on what typically drives group dynamics in organisations and what takes employees off task. The training was worthwhile.
Nontu Shongwe, Organisational Consultant, South Africa
The reading list feels like being back at university. Thought-provoking. Brain-stretching. But it’s just the warm-up. This training isn’t about sitting back and absorbing - it’s real, immersive, and at times, uncomfortably revealing. The kind of uncomfortable that peels back layers and exposes what’s really at play. Jean has a gift for cutting through the noise, always steering the conversation back to the deeper, often hidden forces driving behaviour - both in individuals and across organisations. The Dream Matrix exercises? Unexpected. Sometimes strange, always fascinating, and surprisingly insightful. And the diverse group makes the experience even richer, challenging perspectives and making the insights hit even deeper.

I joined Jean’s Consultancy Training Groups about 4 years ago as a fun enrichment and ended up with a whole new career path. He masterfully balanced diverse participants, engaging content, and good pedagogy that gave genuine depth and clear ways to apply our learnings. Everyone who participated really wanted to be there, eagerly sharing insights and supporting each other's growth. The comprehensive resource materials added significant value to this enriching learning experience.

Participating in this consultancy training group on system psychodynamics in the workplace has been an incredibly insightful experience. Each session provided valuable learning opportunities, deepening my understanding of organisational dynamics, unconscious processes, and leadership challenges. The discussions were thought-provoking, and the facilitator created a space for meaningful reflection and engagement. Beyond the knowledge gained, I had the opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals from around the world, enriching my perspective and expanding my network. This program has been both intellectually stimulating and personally rewarding, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore the deeper layers of workplace dynamics.
Ruan Viljoen, Organisational Consultant, South Africa
Jean's Consultancy Trainings have been incredibly insightful. After participating multiple times, each session continues to open up new perspectives. There are very few environments where one can genuinely work with the unconscious, system dynamics, and real case studies—Jean's groups are one of them. The diverse group of participants from around the world not only offers fresh perspectives but also provides valuable insights. This blend of diversity and depth is truly genuine and enlightening, and it's reassuring to know I'm not alone in addressing the unseen challenges within my organisation. Professionals like Jean help us keep the boat afloat.

I have participated in the TILT Consultancy Training Groups organised by Jean Cooper since their inception in 2020. These have included both in-person and online formats, each group running typically over a calendar year. These training groups have been incredibly valuable for me at several levels. In bringing together like-minded individuals from extremely diverse backgrounds and disciplines, they have created a unique space for sharing and deepening understanding of group psychodynamic and other related methodologies. In itself, these spaces are hard to find. Not only were Jean’s training groups safe places to explore the theory and find applications for it in daily personal and organisational life, but they also afforded opportunities to practise my own skills and receive inputs from others on my own case studies that I brought. Jean has both a gift and a passion for this work. His approach is balanced, pragmatic and yet sensitive and nuanced to both individuals and the characteristics of each group. His wealth of knowledge and experience allowed breakthrough insights for me on more than one occasion and I would heartily recommend this to anyone interested in exploring these fields.
Hugh Harrison, Strategy Executive and Group Facilitator, South Africa
The Consultancy Training Groups combine the theory and practice of systems psychodynamics and its application to present-day social and organisational difficulties. These sessions offer an in-depth analysis of concepts underpinning this approach to organisational development and provide a way for consultants to understand unconscious group processes, partner with clients/stakeholders for change, test these ideas in practice, and evaluate the results and performance. Attending these sessions also contributes to my ongoing professional development. The Training Groups provide more than conventional CPD training—they offer insights into the diverse aspects of real organisational life. These experiences are also essential for my growth as both a professional and a human. They have challenged me in terms of my humanity and identity in immeasurable ways. This immersive learning experience has taken me to deeply transformational places. Anyone interested in optimising how systems work in their organisations and their inter-organisational relationships must attend…. of course, if you dare to go to previously unexplored places. It is an Adventure.
Dr. Henriëtte Malherbe, Organisational Consultant and Executive Coach, South Africa
Learning from Jean on the "Consultancy Training Group" was a true privilege. His authentic presence combined with his profound knowledge and wisdom provides room for learning and improvement for professionals like me from different parts of the world. It was one of the deepest experiences of learning both personally and professionally. I'm considering re-attending one of his programs in the near future and recommend it to professionals who are keen on working with systems dynamics on and off the table.
Burcu Basan, Organisational Consultant and Leadership Coach, Turkey
I have always had an interest in the system psychodynamic field but felt like an observer, as I lacked the knowledge to engage with it fully. The Training Group deepened my understanding of myself and the unconscious dynamics influencing individuals, groups, and leaders in organisations. Jean is a thoughtful and skilled convener, creating a deeply reflective and insightful space (in the here and now) where group processes can naturally unfold. The experience is both containing and enriching, offering a unique opportunity to explore these dynamics in real-time.
Johann van der Nest, Organisational Consultant, New Zealand
Being part of three TILT Consultancy Training Groups over the past four years has been invaluable to my work as a facilitator and team coach. The sessions provide a deep exploration of the theories that underpin a systems psychodynamic approach, while the group format allows for rich discussion and real-world application. I’ve had countless ‘aha’ moments that have profoundly shaped my understanding of complex human systems. Dr. Jean Cooper’s extensive knowledge, combined with his ability to create space for diverse perspectives while offering his own insightful contributions, makes these groups truly exceptional. I highly recommend them to anyone looking to deepen their understanding of dynamics in groups, teams and organisations.

Ever since completing my Master’s in Organisational Leadership, I’ve struggled to find a training program that truly challenged me to grow as a leader. Jean’s training far surpasses any book or course I’ve taken since. I’ve been part of the training groups from the start and haven’t missed a year. The structure, the people, and the content never gets old, even as we revisit some of the same content year after year. Learning to observe group dynamics in real time has been instrumental in identifying similar patterns in the organisations I work with. I now feel more equipped as a leader and better able to equip others. Whether you’re a consultant or a leader within an organisation, I cannot recommend this course highly enough.
Stephan Swart, Organisational Consultant, South Africa
Tilt’s Consultancy Training Group were an eye-opener for me in terms of the underlying group dynamics to be found in any kind of context. They pointed out the tip of the iceberg and indicated the size and therefore power of what is lying below the surface. The sessions were well grounded in topic-relevant research papers, which provided vocabulary to the various, in general subtle dynamics.
Susanne Schlingmann-Viljoen, Leadership Coach, Germany
What I truly enjoyed about this training was the seamless combination of structure, people, and content. Despite not having a formal background in psychoanalysis, Jean expertly bridged the gap, making complex concepts tangible and applicable to real life. The experience felt like both my role and I were being mentored—not just by Jean, but by the group itself. The sessions gave me language to articulate what was happening within my team, helped me catch my blind spots, and provided the space to reflect on how I can respond to workplace dynamics that often operate beneath the surface. More than just theory, this training brought clarity to the unspoken forces influencing both people and product outcomes in my workplace. Beyond professional growth, the impact was deeply personal. The training sharpened my awareness of everyday interactions, helping me recognize patterns and choices in both work and life. It gave me the confidence to make significant decisions with a full understanding of their impact. Jean’s approach didn’t just teach me about psychodynamics—it opened a new world of awareness that will continue to shape how I navigate teams, leadership, and personal growth. My ultimate goal is to make the workplace a joyful place, and this training gave me the tools to do just that. It empowered me to foster an environment where people thrive, not just professionally, but as whole individuals. If you’re looking for training that expands both your professional and personal insight, I highly recommend this experience.

Reading
Since we started in 2020, we have covered the following reading material. Some of these we have covered only once, others we have revisited from time to time, and some are always included as we learn something new from them each time we read them. We are including new articles to the list as we move along.
In 2024 we also started to use the following book as a useful text to bind the key systems psychodyamics concepts together: Sher, M., & Lawlor, D. (2017). An introduction to systems psychodynamics: Consultancy, research and training. London: Routledge.
